The other day I sent another 1kg package off to South Africa. As usual, it was just a bit over 1kg (1017 grams... I always get a little too entusiastic when packing, and put just one to many things in...) A 1kg package costs 8.70 euros, whereas if it's over a kilo it costs more than 16.
I asked the woman if I could please use her scissors and tape to take one thing out and close it up again, and she looked at me and said, "let's just pretend it's exactly one kilo."
Oh my! :-)
I said to her "it's for charity..." and she just nodded.
So sweet!

Good for her, I have had nice people like that in my post office too. I have yet to ship anything to SAfrica, but I think it would be the same as shipping to my native land Britain.

I had the same last week Mary.
I took in 4 parcels, one of which was 10 gms over the kilo, but she just weighed the four together and as it was under 4kg she let me off.
Unfortunately everything goes by air from Lanzarote, so I have to pay 16euros + for everything up to 1kg.
I had to swallow hard when I had to hand over almost 78euros!
I think from now on I'm going to try and give my parcels to people going back to the uk to post for me as it appears that they cost half that by sea. When you are sending a lot that makes a big difference. I'd rather spend the saving on more yarn!
Dawn x
