It is with great sadness that we learned of the untimely passing of one of our member's Gloria, from her husband, Kurt. With his permission, I am posting this memorial message in honour of her and the work she did for KAS through her church, Pleasant View United Methodist Church.

Gloria was one of earliest members, writing often in the first months after the Lion Brand publication in February last year. She had soon encouraged her knitting group, the Knit Wits to take up the cause and knit for KAS. She made a personal pledge to knit 40 squares.

In a letter last April she wrote: "this is the first charity I have been involved in that I get to see the results and feel close to the organisation." It made an impact and helped determine the culture of the KAS community, which I think we all enjoy so much.

In one letter Gloria wrote that she had introduced KAS to her mother-in-law who had quit smoking after 63 years! Gloria suggested knitting squares to keep her hands busy which she said really worked for her and commented that 'this charity is doing good in ways you never dreamed of!"

Kurt said that despite her illness she stayed positive to the end. He wrote: "Gloria used her last days as a ministry to others. She spent many days in our hospital and if you would ask any of the staff in intensive care or the oncology floor about Gloria, they would surely remember her sparkling eyes and message of hope, even in her illness. Her view was simply this: I win either way!!! I miss her dearly, but take comfort in knowing that she made a real difference in many people’s lives during our time together.

Thank you for honoring Gloria with your kind words and please accept my sincere encouragement to you to carry on with your ministry and for the difference you are making in the lives of South African orphans."

Kurt is sending the squares that Gloria had completed to South Africa. When Ronda receives them she will put them to one side and we will make up a blanket with them while we are visiting. I hope we are able to give this blanket to a child in honour of Gloria and to be able to send a photograph for Kurt and his family.

So sorry to hear of her passing :( she sounds like an incredible woman that truly found happiness and love in life and greatly impacted others with her optimism and positive attitude. The KAS community will miss her. I'll keep her family in my prayers.

This project has "knitted" so many of us together that never would have met or chatted otherwise and so I grieve along with others of this group. She joined right before I did and yes she was a blessing to this charity. My prayers go with her husband and family and I'm so glad her husband let the rest of us know and Sandy always having the right words to say at the right time and we'll definitely not forget her work with KAS!

Thank you Sandy and Kurt for sharing this story with all the KAS family. What an inspiration Gloria is to us here at KAS and others lucky enough to have met her. Doing work for KAS does have rewards far greater than a simple 8" square. How wonderful that Gloria experienced much joy from this project. My prayers go to Kurt, the family and friends that Gloria inspired and touched.

What sad news. At least she was able to make a difference in this world, and oh, what a difference she made! It would be so wonderful if you could get a photo of the blanket to Kurt. I'll remember Gloria fondly.

It is never easy to share bad news about good people, is it? What a well written blog post Sandy. Lots of prayers for Kurt & their family at this difficult time. It is clear that Gloria will be much missed in this world of ours.
