Square Circle Forum

my name is margaret wakefield and i joined squarecircle last december after the toughest two years of my life. i have three children and i am a widow as my lovely husband died two years ago, aged 49, from complications after an op for bowel cancer. we were trying to come to terms with this when i was diagnosed with breast cancer in september 2008. on the same day i found out my mam had died and she had been dead for two months in her house. following two ops for cancer i had 4 months of chemo then a month of radiotherapy. during this time i didn't have time to think about the things i was going through nor did i have time to grieve for my husband. reality hit in november of last year when i had a really bad time trying to accept the things that had happened to me and my family. my mam in law was knitting teddies for tragedies so i decided to look for something to do myself. that is when i discovered your website. i have knit and crocheted 30 squares, 20 hats, 20 vests and jumpers and 10 ponchos. i have found a great coneentment doing this and it is wonderful to know that in doing so little i can help so many people. i have my own personal aim to make 100 squares, hats and vests this year. i thank you for giving me the inspiration and a reason to do some good for someone.

Margaret we are so happy to have you with us, honey. You've certainly "been through the trenches" recently, wow. My condolences and sympathies over the loss of your mam and your husband. He certainly died young. Mine is 70 and "disgustingly" healthy, lol. I say that with a grin and I say that because his whole family is healthy, his sis, one year younger than me is running in the Boston Marathon this year. She runs marathons for the fun of it! There sure are all kinds in the world and it makes for great variety eh?

Bravo on enduring the chemo and ops, hon. We do a 24 hour walkathon for Cancer Survivors and in memory of loved ones, every year in this town, with teams who dress up and you can come and go any hours you so choose. Luminarias (lights in paper bags) line the track at the high school where we walk. I usually manage a couple of laps in memory of my mum who passed from lung cancer. What a sense of all pulling together that brings, just like all of us working here at KAS.

What a super goal you've set yourself, that is excellent. You must let us know what your latest creative endeavours are as you finish them. I find crocheting keeps ME out of mischief but gets my cat INTO mischief, as in attacking the work and my hook and the yarn. :)

all the best,
Jeanne :)

It is so uplifting to read of some-one who can can think of and do for others when going through such tough times of their own. You are definitely a Kas hero !! Long may you have the stength to carry on for your own sake and for your children. When I think times are rough for me i think of a few people I know who are 'making it' - you will be there among the top of my list.

i don't even know what to say. you have been through so much. you must be a very strong person to be able to continue with others in mind as your therapy. the saying goes that there is always someone worse off then yourself. when it comes to the children and the loss they experience it is understandable that someone like yourself who has experienced it first hand would reach out and touch the little ones. thank you for being so selfless and kind during what must be the most difficult time in you life. to give back -to bring some happiness to those in such dire need surely is a peaceful feeling for me. may you find peace in immeasurable amounts for the good you do. you are truly one of mankind's best.

Have just read your story and it made me weep. I am a fairly new member of KAS joining in January having just bought my first computer. My husband has advanced Alzheinmers and I nurse him at home with the help of carers so have time on my hands and love knitting so KAS has really given me a focus too. To lose your husband at such a young age is so sad. We have been married for 47 years and are blessed with 4 grandchildren although my husband no longer knows them but he had some good years with them. Your story must give hope to many people and I have found joining square circle and talking to so many nice people has been a joy for me.

WOW! (((HUG)))
That is a lot to go through in such a short time. I had my own scare with a bad mamo. I was lucky and it was NOT cancer. But I know when you are thinking about your own life/death, it consumes everything. It's hard to just get out of bed.
I applaud you for your work. That is a lot to contribute.
Keep up the good work! Jana
