This is called Knot Stitch and comes from Simply Knitting's magazine's monthly Stitch Library. It is very easy and makes a nice textured square.
Cast on a multiple of 2 sts + 1 - I used 31 stitches for chunky yarn knitted on 6mm needles.
Row 1 (RS) P1,*K1 tbl, P1, rep from* to end
Row 2 Knit
Repeat these 2 rows to form pattern
(tbl-through back of loop)
