Regina - I use size 7 needles but that can vary depending on how large you want the heart. Here's the pattern:
Cast on 3 stitches
Row 1 - knit across row, increasing one stitch at each end (5 stitches)
Row 2 - knit across row.
Rows 3 through 21 - Repeat rows 1 & 2 until there are 25 stitches, ending with a row 1 increase row. (note - I put a safety pin on the increase side so that I don't have to keep track of whether I'm on row 1 or 2.)
Rows 22 through 29 - Knit 8 rows (ending with the safety pin on the other side of your work - which I think looks like the "wrong" side)
Now you are going to start the decrease process which occurs on the opposite side of your work - the side without the safety pin.
Row 30 - Knit across 12 stitches
Row 31 - Turn work and knit back across the 12 stitches above (you are now going to work these stitches leaving the other stitches on the needle)
Row 32 - Decrease (knit two together) at each end of row (10 sts)
Row 33 - Knit
Row 34 - Decrease at each end of row (8 sts)
Row 35 - Knit
Row 36 - Knit 6 stitches and then knit the last two stitches together (7 sts)
Row 37 - Knit
Row 38 - Knit two together, Knit two together, and Knit three together (3 sts)
Row 39 - Bind off remaining three stitches. Cut Yarn and finish off.
Using a new piece of yarn, work other side of heart top with remaining 13 sts on needle:
Row 1 - Knit two together, knit to end of row (12 sts)
Row 2 - Knit
Row 3 - Decrease at each end of row (10 sts)
Row 4 - Knit
Row 5 - Decrease at each end of row (8 sts)
Row 6 - Knit
Row 7 - Knit two together then knit to end of row (7 sts)
Row 8 - Knit
Row 9 - Knit three together, knit two together, knit two together (3 sts)
Regina - thanks for your comment. I either knit or crochet the basic square and then knit the heart and hand stitch it to the square. It's kind of a long process but it makes a pretty square and keeps the project interesting. Let me know if you want the instructions for the heart. Thanks, Candyce
Hi, Regina! Say, I wanted to thank you so much for the red ribbon gift you sent me! It's the first gift I've received on this site; I do appreciate it! I'll be thinking about your home state tomorrow, when the Phillies meet the Yankees in Clearwater, Florida for the first spring training game of the year. We plan to bring lawn chairs inside and eat ballpark-style hot dogs while we watch the game on TV. I'll be happily crocheting on the sofa!
Welcome to knit a square Regina !! and congratulations on taking a step towards helping orphans in Africa. Your time and dedication will be truly appreciated :)
I agree with Donna, you do super work, it's very inspiring. I enjoy the videos and photos of the kids receiving blankets and hats and toys too...really motivates me to do more. :)

Hey, Regina:
Thanks for friending me! Hey, we both come from towns with great baseball teams! Do you follow the Rays at all?
