A Diamond in a Square



Crochet Pattern


4.50 hook


Stitches used


Fp:  Front Post. 


     -YO, insert hook behind the post of the stitch from front to back to front.


     -YO, pull through. There are now three loops on hook.


     -YO and draw through two loops. Twice (Finish as you would a dc).



Sc: single crochet


Hdc: half double crochet


Tc:  treble crochet


     - YO twice, insert hook in stitch,


     -YO, pull through.  There are now four loops on hook.


      -YO and draw through two loops.  Three times.


Puffy stitch: tc  then sc , when repeated a number of times creates a  “puffy” look.


Diamond:


Finished size: Measuring the width, it is between 5" and 5 1/2", depending upon the yarn used

With colour A; Ch 3, sl st in 1st ch to make circle.


Rnd 1:  Ch 3, 11 dc in circle (12 sts)


Rnd 2: Ch 2, fp around same st; *hdc in next st, fp around same st * repeat from * to * to end. Sl st in top of ch. ( 24 sts)


Rnd 3: Change to colour B:  Ch 2, hdc in next st, fp around same st, *hdc in next st, hdc and fp in next st; repeat from * to
* to end of circle.  Sl st in top of ch
(36 sts)


Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in next st, sc in next 4 st, hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st ( corner made); * hdc in next 2 st, sc in next 4 st, hdc in next 2 st, 3 dc in next st
*; repeat from * to * twice ( 4 corners)


Rnd 5:  Puffy stitch round:  Change to colour A: Ch 1, sc in same st; tc in next st; * sc in next st, tc in next st *; repeat from
* to * twice  ; **[ tc, sc, ch, tc sc ]
in middle dc of corner; ( tc in next st, sc in next st,) 4 times** ; Repeat
from ** to ** 3 times.  Sl st in top of ch.


Rnd 6:  Change to colour B; ch 2, hdc in each st to corner ch; (2hdc, 1ch, 2hdc) in ch; *hdc in each st to next corner (2hdc,1ch,2hdc) in ch*; Repeat from * to * 3 times.  Hdc in next st. Join to top of ch 2.  End.


Triangle corner to create square:


With RS facing, join in corner ch, working in back loop, dec over next 2; sc in next 14 st, then dec over last 2 sts, ch 1. Turn (16 sts).


Row 2:  Dec over first 2 sts at beginning of row, sc in each st to last 2, then dec  over last 2 sts, ch 1. Turn. (-2 sts)


Continue row 2 until 1 sc remains.  End .  One triange complete.


Repeat on all sides.


Edge: 


Row 1: With RS facing; Join yarn at corner, ch 1,* 3 sc in corner, 25 sc evenly spaced along side ( 12, 1 in corner of small square, 12)*.  Repeat 3 more times.  Join with sl st in ch.


Row 2: Repeat row 1, remembering to increase 3 sc in each corner.


Measure width.  If 20 cm (8”) across, end leaving 1 metre tail.


If square is not 20 cm ( 8”) across, repeat row 2 until desired width then end, leaving 1 metre tail .
