Hello fellow KASers!

I've never been one for putting myself out there so I've been slow to start a blog. I thought it was about time. I apologize in advance because I tend to "go on".
I live in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada with my husband, David, and my two boys Mason (6) and Evan (3). I work at an advertising agency as a graphic designer in downtown Toronto.
My mother taught me to crochet when I was 7 years old. Whenever someone I knew got married, bought a house or had a baby, my crochet hook was awoken from its slumber and introduced to new yarns, patterns and stitches. That is, until Knit-a-square. Nothing has been as rewarding as making squares, baby blankets, Go-Overs and KASCuddles for KAS. I've been crocheting for one year straight.
Now that KAS exists, I find it hard to crochet for anyone else. If I choose to make something non-KAS, I always make sure to have something KAS on the go at the same time. It's all about balance!
I am very interested in new patterns and stitches so please feel free to share. I love learning new things! I've picked up some really interesting patterns from others already.
There is something Sandy wrote in the newsletter that struck me to my core:
"The squares we make are indeed a currency of hope. When they are sewn into a blanket, they keep children warm, often children who are ill and who, if kept cold, would undoubtedly become gravely unwell.
"The blankets are vibrant and beautiful and a gift to a child who may never have received a gift of such magnitude before. As we hand them out, the children are told that the blankets have been made by people around the world who care for them."
I will never stop crocheting after reading those words. Thank you for reading mine! :o)

  • Thank you, everyone! You all still have the biggest hearts, I see. I've missed your support, kind words of encouragement and thoughtfulness. I love being a part of the KAS community. One of these days I would love to meet you in person. Oh, a Knit-a-Square Summit - can you imagine that? :o)

  • Great to see you back, Andrea.  Congrats on the weight loss.....what an achievement!!!...I am still procrastinating over (or planning, as I like to think of it...lol) losing weight....as usual..  :))

  • You may have lost quite a few pounds in weight Andrea, but your heart is as big as ever!  Keep the crochet going, as the funds will arrive because of your continued faith in producing creative gifts for KAS!

  • Hello all! I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted in this blog but here I am, finally. After over a year, work has finally started to slow down enough for me to give Square Circle more of my attention.

Since that time, Mason has turned 6, Evan turned 3, my husband was laid off, I was promoted and I lost 25 pounds. I've been devoted to UFOs lately - out of 7 UFOs I've finished 3. Due to a lack of funds, I haven't been able to send nearly the same number of packages that I did last year but I am still crocheting. I know this will result in a backlog of items to send but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

I think it's more than fair to say I've missed you all terribly and I'm happy to be back.

    Andrea :o)

    • Great to have you back Andrea and well done to your weight loss - wow 25 pounds :)

    • Hey, Andrea, welcome back!  What an eventful time for you!  I "feel you" (as my kids say) about the backlog.  I have baskets and baskets of squares and hats, even the odd bootie, as yet unmailed!  Congrats on the weight loss -- you have all my respect on that one!  Glad your fam is well.  Glad you're back in touch!

      • Hey Andrea! Congratulations that is an awsome weight loss. What an eventful year ! Great to have you back.

    • Good to have you back Andrea !   I've been wondering where you were.  It has been a busy year for you, much has happened in your life. The boys will have grown in that time.  Congrats on the promotion and losing weight !!  Glad the crochet hook is still working :-)

  • My wonderful husband treated me to a solo trip to Michael's on Saturday. They had some new yarn on sale that I wanted to check out. I spent a glorious 30 minutes meandering through the yarn aisle, feeling the softness of this one, looking at the colours of that one, imagining what a square would look like made from a certain yarn.

I ended up in front of the Loops & Threads Country Loom, new to Canada. All of a sudden, I had an overwhelming urge to make something for myself. I realized that I've been crocheting for 31 years and I have never made myself one item. I mean nothing, not a leg warmer, pot holder, blanket. Nothing. So I bought 8 balls of this. It's called "Driftwood" and I fell in love with it.

The guilt lasted very little time as I tried to remind myself that I always do things for other people... I deserve something for myself as well. Of course, I will work on my own project along side my squares, KASCuddle and baby blanket, but it'll get done eventually!

And because it was something for me, my husband (thankfully) didn't give me too much of a hard time for bringing MORE yarn home! :o)
    • good for you andrea I hope to make a Afghan out of squares for myself someday I want to make each square or at least some of them in different stitches. I have been doing the basic garter stitchI do know how to purl too. I wish I had someone to teach me other stitches I may take a knitting classes and i guess its easy enough to learn on line too. You something easy I have made for myself is a book mark. They have alot of neat ones on the internet I just again used the garter stitch. Did you say what you are knitting for your self. Post it when you get done.
