Diagonal squares

Does anyone have any idea how to knit a diagonal square.  I have tried increasing by knitting in the front and the back of stitches however I found it became very tight and lumpy.  If I do yarn over needle it leaves a hole and I didn't want to do that as it isn't very warm.  I would be grateful for any suggestions.  Dianne

  • I do yarn over sometimes to ge the pattern . It will still be warm as it allowas a pocket of warm air to be trapped there. PS - I've got a blog post coming up about this very thing next week! I'll link it when it comes :)

    • I'm going to try Jan's method as well as she is such a good knitter but I can't say that I've ever had any problem with knitting front and back (kfb). I do do the increases (and decreases) in the second or third stitch of every row though and not the first.

      • Thanks Elizabeth and Christine.  Still trying this one out hope to have success soon.

  • Thank you very much for your replies.  I've downloaded the instructions from Jan and am looking forward to trying it.  Isn't it funny that I am aware of these methods and yet I forgot how to do it.  The brain can shut down at the most inconvenient times!  I couldn't see the solution because I was too concerned about the problem.  Dianne

  • Hi Dianne

The method I use most for increasing is picking up from the row below.

This is the M1 method which is shown in detail here

    Hope this helps

    • Thanks Jan - it really does, I have printed it off and will give it a try.  Dianne

  • Hello! I just learned how to do this to and it isn't difficult. To start you have to start with 3 stitches and then increase 1 stitch at the beginning of every row to 42 stitches ( using #7 needles and worstred weight yarn).

Then decrease 1 stitch every row back down to 3 stitches and then bind off.

My info comes from my Nana the "The Cape Cod Gogo".
