Elephant Square

4.50 mm hook
2 colours
Roll colour A into 2 balls

Ch 32
Row 1: With colour A; Hdc in each st across (30 sts)
Rows 2 and 3: Repeat row 1
Check gauge.  The width should be 8”.
Rows 4-8:  Refer to chart below: Starting on the right side of the chart, hdc in each st , following the chart for colour changes. Carry colours.  If you wish to have the elephant facing in the opposite direction start from the left.
Rows 9-18: Follow chart but do not carry colours.  Start second ball of colour A to finish row.
Rows 19-22: With colour  A, hdc in each st across. Adjust to 8” by adding  or omitting a row. Or use a row of sc instead of hdc.  Leave a 36” end.
Tuck in all ends.  Securely tie ends where the colours have changed.
Tail:  Braid 3 pieces of colour B .  Attach one end to the elephant.
Tips:
When using the chart,
mark off each row as you finish.
Put a straight edged ruler on the chart and move just ahead of your work. (helps keep you on the correct row)

  • Linda,

Thanks for putting this chart together for the very cute elephant. I just knit it up and posted a photo, crediting you with the pattern. The bottom was a rat's nest of bobbins, but at least that's all on the back side.

  • Simple, effective, just plain COOL. Thanks for sharing the pattern. Even I am not intimidated by this one!
  • Thanks Enid, I took a cross-stitch pattern and redesigned it for crochet plus made it 8", suitable for a square. The pattern works up quite quickly so I may do more to send.
  • very nice, have you designed this?
    xx
