Need a free way to get large lot of knits transported to Johannesburg.

Do you know of anyone travelling in the near future from Melbourne, Australia to somewhere near KAS headquarters in South Africa?... possibly home for Christmas.... or for business... who would be willing to take a parcel of knits in their luggage?

I have collected over 200 childrens' hand knitted jumpers, over 100 knitted beanies, 95 pairs of booties, 9 blankets, 10 leggings and 3 ponchos. I got them from a charity clothing collection wholesaler. Got them real cheap and it's all good quality. Purchase price worked out at less than 80cents per item.

Now I'm looking for people who are travelling by plane in the near future from
Melbourne, Australia to Johannesburg, South africa. I want to ask them if they will transport in their luggage a packaged portion of these clothes to save the cost of shipping.

Some airlines allow extra luggage weight at no cost if it is for charity and a request is submitted to the airline ahead of departure date.

If you know of anybody who is willing to help out with getting these knits to South Africa without cost, or if you know of any relevant organisations I could contact, then please let me know or pass on my contact details to the person (LeanneWooster@gmail.com).

Thanks,
Leanne

  • Hi Leanne, wow, great news. I suggest advertising on Facebook. I could also try this with my Facebook friends tomorrow, if you ok with this. Please let me know. One of my friends is married to a SAA pilot. Would you be able to advise the total weight and dimensions of all the items / cargo?

    • Hi Gita,

      I have 8 bags size 25cm x 60cm x 50cm and the total weight is just under 60kg.

Thanks and have a great day,

      Leanne

    • Hi Gitta,

That's awesome. Thank you. In total there is probably about 6 of those red, white & blue shopping bags that you see in the Asian $2 shops. They're about 2 feet x 2 feet x 8 inches wide roughly.

This is just an estimate. I will work out the exact volume and weight and let you know the specifics. It didn't cross my mind the possibility of somebody being able to transport the whole lot.

I know how to get more suitable hand knits at less than $1 a piece. The transporting is the issue so help with this is much appreciated.

Yes, please advertise on Facebook and give my contact info. Leannewooster@gmail.com.

      Thanks so much,

      Leanne

  • OMG you Have collected a lot !! What a wonderful contribution and it would be a real shame if there is not some way of getting them there. Is there any way you can advertise in a local paper or on radio?

    • That's a good idea. Thanks Sue. And Facebook too.
