Hi

I am a newbie as well - gave up triathlons after one too many injuries. My husband bought me needles, wool and a book for my birthday in September. I have mastered a few stitches and have knitted a lovely cushion cover and goldilocks and the three bears. I never know what to knit next so I thought why not help other people. I stumbled across an advert in a magazine and joined. I do have a few questions though.

Can i use any size needles as long as my square ends up as 8 inches?

Also can i practise patterns to help me become a better knitter?

Do I need to log my squares anywhere to ensure I meet my target of 60 squares ?

Sorry about all the questions but I have never done anything like this before

Happy knitting people

Helen

  • Hi Helen,  I'm using KAS squares to improve my crochet, everyone's really helpful and encouraging,.  I look forward to seeing your photos on the forum.  Oh and welcome to the KAS community  ...Roz x

  • welcome to KAS.  the squares in the pattern book are really easy to do and so are the jumpers, just have fun with your knitting.

  • Hello Helen, welcome to the forum. Well done for getting started on knitting - it sounds as if you're doing really well. Your questions:

Yes, any yarn can be used to make a square and the needle that is appropriate for it will be fine. There's usually a suggested size of needle on a ball-band but if your tension is tight or loose you may wish to go up or down a size. Whatever you're happy with.

Yes, many of find that practising patterns on squares is an excellent way of learning. We aim for warm 8" squares but if there's a little variation in size don't worry about it too much - the sorters have become accomplished at joining up all comers.

You don't need to log your squares but for fun there is a running tally on the forum that you can add to if you wish http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/topics/2013-knit-a-square-tall... .  If you would like to join the UK group (or any other) we'd love to have you and there is also a tally there. When squares arrive and are counted in South Africa they are also entered  on spread-sheets which are published monthly so that you can look for your name there (allowing at least 6 weeks for surface-mail to arrive), for instance this is January's http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/topics/2013-january-squares-li...

As you look through the forum you will find lots of information and inspiration. The Photos tab is very good for ideas and the Pattern Book gives examples of different patterns that you could try.

We are happy to answer any questions that you may have and you will find everyone very friendly and supportive. Lovely to have you with us.
