Hi, not sure if I am introducing myself in the right spot. My name is Suzan, I have been a knitter since my college years.  I came across Knit A Square while googling and thought it was a wonderful idea and decided that I would get a group going. I have about 7 women that have decided to join me in knitting squares. Some prefer to sew so  I have a question on whether we can finish a felted square with a blanket stitch. Would that make it is easy for joining felted squares when it is sent to South Africa. Can you direct me where to go with this question? I am very excited about doing this. Ironically enough, one of the girls that I did invite to join my group is heading to South Africa in April for a vacation and taking a day to visit one of the schools you have. She may be coming with squares in hand if we have any ready by than and if it is possible to let her do that.

  • I think they were sewing the felted squares together on the sewing maschine in S.A.
  • Hi Suzan.  It would make joining felted squares much easier if they had blanket stitch around them as then the blanket stitch yarn could be used for joining, instead of having to punch holes through the felt squares.  Do double check with Kalai or Erin in case they have a brighter idea. :)

If one of your girls is headed to South Africa, well, recently a KASer who is an airline stewardess, Isabelle Bourguignon, took an entire suitcase of sweaters, hats, squares and toys with her and it was a great success.  It also saves a LOT of money in postage costs. So if your friend can take an extra suitcase or bag with her that would be excellent. :)

    luv, Jean

  • Welcome, Suzan!  It sounds like you have a great group going already!  And that is SO convenient that you have someone who will actually be going to South Africa!!  Probably the best way to get in touch with those in South Africa to coordinate a delivery of squares would be to click on the "Forum" heading up at the top, and then look for a discussion by Kalai McDonald.  Click on her picture and it will take you to her page where you can leave her a comment or send her a message.  She will be able to help you with your questions =).
    • Thank you Rachel,  I sent her a message about delivering squares in person, would she also answer my question about a blanket stitch sewn around a felted square? I subscribed to the square circle to find results on how the Soweto (spelling?) Club was doing with just that but I couldn't find anything. Thanks again for your help.
      • You're welcome =)!

You might also send Erin a message;  she is in South Africa and works with getting squares unpacked, etc.  Here page is here:  http://square-circle-forum.ning.com/profile/ErinvanderVyver?xg_sour....  She would probably know about the felted squares and delivering squares in person too.  It just might take her a day or two to get back to you;  I don't think I've noticed her on the forum as often as I've noticed Kalai.  I'm sure they will be happy to hear from you!
