mittens

I have completed one square and was looking at the pattern book and website. I did not see any mention of mittens. Is this an item that could be used? Thanks!

  • Our  young recyclers in Jeffreys Bay also love them and have requested them too :) In fact the Stitch Witches will have a fingerless gloves challenge in 2014 :)

    • Great idea, Gitta!  Hello to you, Amy, and welcome aboard.  Some of our greatest contributors popped in here with their comments and suggestions.  Bev, thanks for the photo of Lorinda's work.

  • Hi Amy....and welcome to KAS from over here in Western Australia.

Here is an easy pattern for hand warmers....really is just like a square, only folded in half and sewn up in the appropriate lengths to allow for fingers to come through...plan on making some myself.  :))   http://iamwhatiknit.blogspot.com.au/2010/09/carrie-handwarmers.html

Here is a pic of some handwarmers made from squares that one of our members, Lorinda Jordaan, from South Africa, created earlier this year.

    • Bev perhaps the pattern could be added to Members Patterns - I know Lorinda makes them for children in her region - in fact, they request them!

      • I would be happy to add it, just not sure how that works copyright wise. Perhaps now with ALL my free time...lol...which I hope won't be for too long.....I can knit something similar and pop the pattern for my mittens on there then.  :))

        • Thank you to all for a warm welcome!
There was an easy mitten pattern that I was looking at---but not yet done.
It is a free pattern by April Draven---easy crochet mittens.
Will be trying it soon, and I would think more than one pattern would be useful.
          • I love April's patterns, I'm sure that will work out perfect!  Welcome aboard, we are so happy to have you here!  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!  I am a crocheter myself and I do make a lot of the fingerless gloves for my church and friends.  But you and Bev have me thinking of adding a few to my shipments to S.A.!

I will have to check out April's mitten pattern too!  Be sure and post a photo when you get them done Amy!

          • Oops...that shows the knitter in me......just assumed you were a knitter...hee hee.

If you create some easy crocheted ones, Amy, please add your pattern to 'members patterns'. It is under the 'KASpattern book' tab at the top of this page...I think they will be a great item for those wanting to crochet something small besides squares. We ended up with loads more beanies/hats than blankets at one stage this year, because people were looking for other small and easy projects besides squares. Thanks. Merry Christmas.  :))

  • Mittens are accepted Amy, especially as some parts of South Africa regularly get snow during the winter months!

Squares turned into blankets are the most versatile, as they have a dual purpose - for sleeping under, and, folded in half can be worn as coats in the cold weather.

    Welcome aboard!
