Hello! My name is Doreen Taylor and I am from Aldershot, Hampshire in England.

I am 49 years old and an American (lived in the Washington, DC area for 18 years before moving to the UK!) who married a Brit and moved here. :-)

I have been knitting for…one week! LOL! To be honest, I am just learning to knit, and I thought that doing squares for charity would give me good practice.

I love the idea that I can take this kind of project anywhere and help a charity!

I work as a sales administrator but a lot of my spare time is working as a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator.

I also do papercrafts, so I am busy.

My best friend, who died two years ago of cancer, was an avid knitter and even won Knitter of the Year in the US. I am also doing this in memory of her.

My husband used to knit years ago and he has taken it up again. He loves the idea of making squares for charity.

I look forward to getting started and even making new friends.

  • Hi Doreen.  This is Judy from Orange County California.  Glad to have you with us.  I am also fairly new to this charity, just sent off my first package of 32 squares.  Some were knit and some crochet.  Can't wait to get a letter back to see that they arrived.  Anyways. hope to hear from you again!

  • Hello Dorren

A belated Welcome to KAS from me.  I am sure you will enjoy this wonderful cause as much as I do, and the forum has so many lovely and supportive like minded 'folk' (male and female) it's very motivating.

I've been knitting since I was a very little girl (not that long then....ho hummmm ho hummmm!!!!) and absolutely love it.  Knitting for KAS truly motivates me.  I am sure when your confidence has built, you will feel ready to tackle a simple vest or hat.  Squares are a great way to learn, and try different stitches (You Tube is great, this is how my neighbour (Kate) over the road learnt, along with running across to me now and then!!).  I am fortunate that I have three wonderful 'knitting neighbours' and we all share ideas, wool etc: and it feels like real team work.

So lovely to have you join us, enjoy and keep on clicking!!

  • Thank you everyone for your warm welcome. I really appreciate it. I have made several squares now, and my husband has also made four. I am so glad that I have decided to do this and I can't wait to make more and mail them off!!!!

  • Hello Doreen!! I am so sorry about your friend. It is a lovely idea to knit the squares in her memory. And to have hubby also knit is fantastic. You will get the hang of it soon. It takes a bit of time to get used to the knitting itself, but I actually now knit while watching TV, or today, reading the posts on this forum. I just joined today, so I am a newbie myself. Happy knitting to all of us!

  • Welcome to you and your husband, Doreen! You've come to the right place. I'm sure you'll pick up knitting in no time! Please post some photos of your work when you get a chance. Enjoy the forum!

  • Good to have you and your husband on board Doreen!

  • Welcome to KAS Doreen... good to have you join us.. I also live in the south of England in Dorset... and also am very keen on papercrafts especially making cards.  Enjoy!

    • Hi Doreen and welcome to the forum. You're quite right, this a great way to do something useful as you learn. I'm sure you will make many friends and this being a very positive and supportive group there is always someone happy to help with any queries you may have concerning knitting or the site itself. Great that your husband is also involved - we do have several other male knitters and very good they are,
