Ute's Blog

Well, since we have the opportunity to blog right here, let me have a go at it. I joined this forum only yesterday, and today I already have 4 Blanket squares and I knitted a little hat that only needs to be stitched together. My hands need rest, though, and so do I. I work at a big animal hospital as a kennel worker, and being 42, my body is not liking that too much anymore. My heart and soul do, because I love taking care of the animals, but not my body. Sigh. So I will now roll myself up on my heating blanket and snuggle up with my puppies in bed. My husband works 12 hour night shifts, so he is gone 3 nights a week.

  • I have finished more squares and now have a nice collection of them. I've sewn all the little ends in so they are ready to go. I have a box I can squish them into, so I think I will go with that for now, since my dog food bags actually still have dog food in them :). My knee is better, and I started walking to Jerusalem with my friend Mary Alice. She belongs to a church who invited everyone for a lent challenge to walk and pray to Jerusalem. Those of us who can walk, record their walked miles each week, and if that is not possible, 20 minutes of prayer is also counted as a mile. We are both overweight, so it is a wonderful incentive to get moving. We walked together in the park after work last week, and tonight I actually dusted off the treadmill and walked a very slow mile at home. I had my knee brace on and took it easy, however, I can already feel the impact. I feel very accomplished. I did pray while I walked and had a wonderful time with God.... well, do I record a prayer mile as well? I guess so.

  • My knee has become much better. I just keep wearing the knee brace at work and whenever I am on the move. I have been doing stretches and strengthening exercises and feel like I am making small progress. I had my friend at church pray over my knee yesterday, that was nice.

On a different note, I have completed a whole bunch of squares so far. Now I am in the process of sewing in the ends, so I only have the long one at the end left used to sew the squares together. Once I am done with that, I will take a nice pic, post it and send my squares on. This should happen by the end of the week. I am also going to keep spreading the word in church (if they let me) and at work (if they let me:)

  • I finished more squares. Some are in wonderfully soft chunky yarn. Red. I wanna just lay on them. I just started a white square that I intend to knit a red heart into. Just gotta find me a nice heart pattern. I am having such a great time with this! I also intend to make another hat tonight. I have a sunny yellow/orange chunky yarn that should make a great warm hat for someone. Then over the weekend, I will make sure to get a package ready. I like that idea of documenting all my donations with my digital camera so i can post it on here. I have been so inspired by all the pictures, maybe I can do the same for someone else too. Oh, and I also busted my knee. Overuse I guess. I was sent home from work on Thursday to go to the doctor, and I saw a specialist today. So physical therapy is the answer for now. I like it. And of course I should drop about 30 pounds that ought to help. Ready... set..... drop.

    • Those hats sound just fantastic - do post some pics when you can.  Hope knee not too painful - between bouts of physical therapy give it a good rest as an excuse to do more knitting! :-)

    • Quite a few of us need to drop a pound or two Ute, so do take care, and, please do not forget to post some photos - it inspires us all to keep going.

  • It IS a great way to spend leisure time!  I am originally from upstate New York, and now reside in Tennessee, have been here for 38 years.  I have a lap dog who sits on my lap every day when I get home from work as a paralegal, and she naps while I knit the evenings away in front of the TV.  I generally knit a square a day, sometimes more on weekends.  Found Red Heart Super Saver yarn on sale at AC Moore's yesterday 2/$5.00 and couldn't resist getting several skeins.  They also had pounds of yarn for $5.99 in bright colors.  I didn't even need any, as I yard sale in the summers and find boxes of various yarns for $1 - $3.  I also have friends who will find it either on sale, or at yard sales, and they will donate to the cause.  I seem to never run out of yarn, which is fun, as I love it.  With the Knit-A-Squillion going on now, I mostly knit plain garter stitch, but occasionally break out new stitches for a bunch of squares from a pattern book I have.  Good to meet you - happy knitting!

    • I agree, that the sales are very hard to resist. I do however enjoy yard sailing myself in summer. I didn't really look for yarn the past years, but "game on" this year, lol. I have so much fun with all this! I went to JoAnne's today and they had a sale on yarns, and I got some I plan to knit into hats. I also bought some white baby yarn, that will make my regular acrylic yarn thicker and warmer. I will actually go and knit a little now. What breed (or breeds) is your little lapdog, and what's her name? I have a black lab, her name is Velvet, and a white little Cockerpoo-Lhasa Apso mix whose name is Bunny. My daugher Sarah is working on her Graphic Design degree and she drew my profile picture on the computer of Bunny sleeping on the couch.

      • Mine is a Malti-Poo named Stella.  She's 9, and I've had her from the get-go.  She's a little spoiled, but since it's just the two of us, we don't care!  I finished my 60th square (in this round) last night, but I usually wait until I have between 130-150 squares before I send them.  It's so expensive to mail that I have found, for me, it is best to squish 140+ into a box and mail for around $75, then to mail more frequent shipments.  I've tried to find those heavy plastic bag-type mailers, even on-line, but can't find them.  We all receive shipments from stores packaged in them, but I haven't yet figured out where they get them.  None of the container stores, or shipping supply places, seem to have those.  I seem to remember reading that KAS has trouble with boxes (maybe not if they're marked properly?), but I don't know of another way, unless I mail in tiny batches, and I just knit too many to do that.  I average 1-2 squares per night.  I sit with my arthritic legs up, and Stella sits on my lap, and we knit away the evenings.  Silly girls!

        • I turn lg.  dry catfood and dogfood bags inside out so printing on the inside and they make strong shipping bags. If your dog doesn't use that size perhaps a friend would save one for you plus wild birdseed comes in a strong bag too.

          • Wow, what a perfect idea!   I NEVER would have thought of it!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
