Hey Alison, yes I agree, I have some bits of bamboo, cotton and silk yarns. They all feel so beautifully soft and even though I can't afford to but such luxury for the blankets, I am always happy to use them up if I get any. Each different little texture is always a little bit special for the kids who get them too.
Hi Alison, really don't worry about what yarns you use. I usually buy dk as it is easy to work with, very available and comes in so many colours and shades. I also get given the strangest mixtures and odds and ends from people and happily use up all those bits too. I always think that the children have so little that they will never complain about some kind of yarn which is included in their very own personal blanket. What ever you have - go for it.
Do not get anxious Alison, any yarn is acceptable for squares, socks and garments. The soft yarn is especially appreciated for anyone vests that are worn next to the skin. If you type Grace's Vest in the search you'll see the variety that members produce - these are ideal as they cover the tummy and the head-hole is nice and wide.
