Hi Jana, read your comment about yarn weights. How frustrating for you !
I use a 4.50mm hook for most of my yarns. I chain 30 stitches and use a half double crochet to make a fairly thick square. Sometimes I use a 5.00mm hook when the yarn is a bit heavier. I also I use 2 thinner yarns and the 5.00mm hook. I have discovered that using a pattern that starts in the centre is easier as I can adjust to 8". There are a couple of these patterns in the KASPattern book.
Hi Jana. My nameś Karla and I am from the Czech Republic, too.It seems to me a bit funny to write you in English...But I just wanted to ask you what amigurumi means. When I was younger I used to crochet, but only simple things. Now I prefer knitting.
Hello Jana, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.
As a crocheter, I am impressed that you have been making amigurumis as your first attempts at crochet. And selling them as well !! Thank you for generously donating the extra to KAS. KAS is run by volunteers and very little money. Making squares is a wonderful thing to be doing for the children and learn new crochet stitches. Plus, we all need an excuse to buy more yarn LOL
If you haven’t already, please read through the welcome message on the forum main page for helpful hints and things that might interest you. The FAQ category should answer any general questions you may have. If not, please ask. http://forum.knit-a-square.com
You might like the Monthly challenge. This is a fun way to try new ideas or patterns. Every month, a theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and different.
February’s challenge is Transportation. Have a look at the discussion for ideas on what you can make.
Many people are using 'Ecofelt' to make the cars/trucks/spaceships and then sewing them onto the plain squares. This is an easy way to give added interest to a square. Plus the children will be delighted !
If you would prefer to work with Plain Janes then have fun with colours that remind you of transportation. Since it takes 35 squares to make one blanket, squares, especially Plain Janes are needed all the time.
If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the month. Those of us who use sea-mail find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Whenever your parcel arrives, know it will be appreciated and that you are keeping children warm.
Welcome, Jana, from near Philadelphia in the USA. We have a friend from Prague (Praha) and my husband has visited Czech Republic while touring with a Klezmer Band. I love your idea of making and selling Amurigami animals for the postage to send squares! You can also send the Amurigami animals as the children love small stuffed toys. Good work and glad you joined KAS!
Hi Jana and a very warm welcome to KAS from Norfolk UK. We are a very friendly bunch so please feel free to ask any questions, there is always somebody with an answer, as I have found out!
Do take a look around the site using the tabs at the top of the page.
The pattern tab will take you to some wonderful knit and crochet patterns of items that are desperately needed. We are focusing on children aged 4-9 years old.
Using the patterns from the KasPattern Book , which are designed for the older child, will ensure you send exactly what the children need to keep them warm.
The photo section has some wonderful pics of peoples work and when you feel ready it would be great to see some of your work but it isn’t a necessity to do this. It’s a great place for ideas and inspiration to keep the children warm.
So glad you have joined us. Happy knitting/crocheting :)
