Welcome to Knit A Square from the middle of Canada! Sorry I’m late with this, my health’s not been brilliant lately. Am I ever brilliant? Ahem, I’m here and sincere now. Greetings! Please feel free to visit Discussions or join Groups to talk about things or go to Photos to see what some members are up to. These are in a line on top of the page, just click on them. As for the photos, talk about yarn artistry! Try not to be intimidated, I’m a plain square person myself but it’s lovely to view the more artsy squares. KAS is a very positive group and all these squares and sweaters and hats etc. go to help the poorest of the poor, the South African AIDS/HIV orphans who are parent-less and being cared for by many good and kind folk in often desperate surroundings. Our crocheted, knitted and sewn items can help give a child hope for the future because they are not forgotten, plus warmth and a smile and often a toy to cuddle. Glad you’re with us!
I'm so glad you've already made 23 squares! You can send 35 or however many squares, but Ronda and her team prefer you don't sew them up. This is for several reasons, but mostly because if postal customs opens the package, they could charge uneccessary fees when it arrives in SA because it is technically a "completed" item. Sending squares doesn't cause any issues because it isn't considered a sellable product until sewn together. If you want to send a whole blankets worth of squares, and you would like them to be in the same blanket, then send a photograph of the squares how you would like them arranged in a blanket in the package along with your squares, and when it arrives in SA they would be happy to sew it up for you. We'd also love to see pictures of your squares/jumpers which you can add to the photo section, by click "add" at the top right of the screen on the photos page.
Hello Margaret! Welcome to KAS! Which do you prefer knitting or crochet? Whichever, we all are happy that you've joined our group. When you've oriented yourself with the forums, you might like to click on the photos tab at the top right of the page, and you can see a sample of the work everybody is doing for knit-a-square aka KAS. Happy knitting!
Hello Margaret, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.
Looking for patterns? Check the KAS Pattern Book for garments and squares for the children. We are focusing on children aged 3-9 years old.
Please visit “Helpful Hints” [see menu bar above] for information:

- Learn when your squares arrived in South Africa!
We have a ‘Drive to Fill Ronda’s KASvan’ with squares and would appreciate if you would add to this challenge. We have filled the KASvan already and are trying to fill it again before 16 September.
We have a monthly challenge as well. This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns revolving around the theme. If you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting. An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting. This month we are making squares with Stripes, Zigzags and Textures. Please join us here to see the lovely squares that have been made and then add a few of your own !
If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the challenge month. Many of us use sea-mail and find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Whenever your parcel arrives, it will be appreciated and you are keeping children warm.
As always, making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people around the world, squares are needed all the time.
We would love to see photos of your work. Click on the photo option in the tabs above and follow the prompts.
