Hi Joan! Agreeing with others, yes, just knit or crochet away! Remember that your squares will be joined with others for wonderfully bright and beautiful blankets, so anything goes. I, too, often double up thinner weight yarn. The puppets are loved by the children. These children have nothing, so having their own cuddly toy is a real treasure for them. I went to a Goodwill store over the weekend as they had a half off sale, and got small cuddlies for $.50 each, which I will include in my next package.
Hi Joan! Regarding your question about whether to double your yarn, it's really up to you. I have some squares that definitely came out on the thin side, but since I know they will be put in with other squares that are most likely warmer, I don't worry too much about it. Usually if the yarn is worsted weight, it should be thick enough. However, sometimes I double the strands just so i can get more done faster LOL! The only thing I don't like about that is that the squares are a bit stiff. Whatever you do will be just fine Joan and KAS will be thrilled to receive them!
Hello Joan! Welcome to this awesome group of individuals, who have found common ground in "working" for KAS! We are absolutely passionate about what we are doing and so very happy to have new faces to get to know!
I see you are from Wisconsin! I am originally from Michigan, but I moved to Georgia about 8 years ago. If you are interested, we have a US group on the forum, where we share more ideas and knowledge of mailing parcels etc. I hope you will join us there as well (I am going to send you an invite for that).
Don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions, or if you just want to chat!
Bless you for wanting to help the children of South Africa!

Hello Joan, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.
You can choose any of the free KASPattern book patterns to print [see tab above]. We always need squares as blankets are the most important item for the children. The volunteers in South Africa love sewing the squares into the blankets.
When you are ready to send your parcel, visit both these sites for important information. Click Here for tips and here for postage rates.
Once you have sent your parcel you can check the squares lists. Every month, we list the squares, beanies and tops that have arrived in South Africa. To find the ‘Squares lists’ please click the ‘Discussions’ tab [see tabs above] then on “Tallies/Item Count” for an up-to-date listing. We also have a ‘Drive to Fill Ronda’s KASvan’ with squares and would appreciate if you would add to this challenge.
We have a challenge for each month. This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns revolving around the theme. If you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting. An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting.
This month we are celebrating Christmas ! Yes, it is a ‘bit’ early but Ronda would like time to prepare the blankets before the holiday season arrives. We will be making squares with a festive theme: Christmas trees, reindeer, bells for example. We also need many squares in reds, greens and whites to compliment the fancy squares. We would love to see your creations. Click here to join in the holiday spirit :-)
If you are interested in joining any of our challenges, please note: Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the month. Those of us who use sea-mail find parcels take between 6-10 weeks to arrive. Whenever your parcel arrives, know it will be appreciated and that you are keeping children warm.
As always, making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children. Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS. Since a blanket is created with 35 squares sent by people from around the world, squares are needed all the time.
http://forum.knit-a-square.com/photo will show you photos of members wonderful creations, including decorative squares or squares of one colour which we affectionately call Plain Janes. Each and every one is very much needed, it takes 35 squares to make one blanket.
I hope you have fun and if you have any questions please ask, we are a very friendly, chatty bunch :)
Welcome to KAS, Joan! So glad to have you with us! I've been knitting squares for them for about five years and love every minute of it. If you have questions about the web site, just ask and someone will get back to you with an answer. This a super-friendly group! Be sure to check out "photos" to be inspired! People are so very talented and use their gifts to keep the children warm - it's wonderful!
