In answer to your question concerning postal rates from UK have a look at Elaine's recent posting http://forum.knit-a-square.com/group/uk/forum/topics/royal-mail-pos... . This gives the prices for Surface Mail parcels and is called the Small Packet Rate ( you may have to insist at the Post Office the first time you go as sometimes clerks tell you airmail prices and say there is no other way.) SmallPacket Rate is for parcels up to 2kg and size restrictions also apply - the total dimensions of the parcel mustn't be more than 90cm, ie: width+height+depth.
Do have a look at the chart before you post and we would love to have join the UK group where this sort of discussion often occurs. Postage is a big issue and we are working on finding a better method of dispatch but at the moment we have no alternative.
Hello Shirley and welcome to KAS – I’m just along the M5 from you in Gloucestershire!
With regard to postage, at the moment, the most cost effective way to send parcels is by Surface mail small packets. You can send up to 2kg at a time this way (the more you send, the less it costs per gram). If you pay a visit to the UK group, one of the ladies there has written a really helpful guide to current postal rates.
Ronda and the team in South Africa are currently trying to apply for an importer’s licence and once granted, there’s talk of arranging a ‘UK hub’ to be able to send things more cost effectively, but we don’t have any definite timescales or information yet, so it’s still Royal Mail for now.
Greetings Shirley from across the Pond in the middle of Canada! Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us. It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.
The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Anyone Want to Chat Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic! Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!
Hello Shirley, so glad you’ve joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.
Would you like to try something different ? Then, you might like the Monthly challenge. This is a fun way to try new ideas or patterns. Every month, a theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and different......it could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting. An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting.
This month’s challenge is In Celebration of the Plain Jane. Check out the different interpretations of a “Plain Jane” or basic square. Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children. Plain Janes are the backbone of KAS. Since it takes 35 squares to make one blanket, squares are needed all the time.
Hi Shirley and a very warm welcome to KAS from Norfolk UK. We are a very friendly bunch so please feel free to ask any questions, there is always somebody with an answer, as I have found out!
Do take a look around the site using the tabs at the top of the page. The photo section has some wonderful pics of peoples work and when you feel ready it would be great to see some of your work but it isn’t a necessity to do this. It’s a great place for ideas and inspiration to keep the children warm.
So glad you have joined us. Happy knitting/crocheting :)
