Hi everyone! I found out about KasCare from a FB friend who sent me the link. She knows I crochet and knit alot. I have been looking for a charity to donate too. I tried to do some work for a few charites in my state and Ohio. But both of them have not kept up with their charity:(

I am 39yrs young, have a wonderful hubby of 22yrs and two beautiful kids, 19 and 15yrs old. We also have two cats:) We live a pretty simple life and happy, peaceful people.

I can't wait to get started....any advice on on how to begin? I am spending time just reading, but my hands are anxious to get started!

  • Hello Mia,

Glad you found us. This is a lovely forum and the ladies on here are always kind and helpful.

If you need some inspiration, there are always monthly challenges to get you knitting/crocheting. April's challenge is for squares/items inspired by flags of the world, so either a representation of the flag, or a square made with a particular flag's colours. These are usually listed under the forum under 'Challenges', but as always, anything you send is always greatly appreciated.

    All the best,

    Karen, x

    • Thanks Karen! I love the flag squares I have seen so far on here! I can't wait to see what next month's challenge will be!

  • Hello Mia and welcome!  So glad to have you join us and you should hop on over to the USA group and join there as well.  This is such a great group of supportive and committed people and you will find that it energizes and inspires you all the time, so be sure to come back to the forum often!

My friend Laurie Fortier is the lady in Canada and she is currently doing a challenge to collect 500 squares by June 1st, which she will then mail to S.A.  Here site is:  http://handswithhearts.com/ and you can find all the info you need under the knitting for charity page.  She is awesome and supportive and that will be a great way to have your squares mailed to S. Africa.  I am also collecting squares from a couple of people in the states, so once Laurie's challenge is over, I might be able to handle some additional mailings.  By the way, I am originally from Michigan, right next door to you!  I now live in GA, although I go up to Michigan quite often to see my kids and grandkids.

Feel free to send me messages or questions any time, I get on here at least once a day (usually more LOL)..........

Hugs and again, welcome, so happy to have you aboard!

    Mary Anne

    • Thank you for the warm welcome Mary Anne! I will definitely check out Laurie's site later today! I plan on spending the weekend knitting and crocheting:) I am really excited about this project. My 15yr old daughter was looking at the site and after seeing all those little faces she has decided to jump aboard too!

  • Just jump in =)! Decide what you're in the mood to make: 8" square (leave a 2 foot tail (I think that's the current requested tail length) for sewing), older-child/adult-sized hat, Baby sleep sack (30" circumference, 35" length, use soft yarn, two strands of worsted weight or something thick), stuffed animal....whatever you're in the mood for today =).

There is currently a wonderful lady in Canada who is collecting things to send to KAS in South Africa, and, if you can keep your package under 4lbs., it costs half as much to send to her as it does to send directly to South Africa. I'm not at my home computer, so I don't have her information handy, but, if you're interested, send me a message and I'll look it up when I get home =).

And I second the photo section recommendation! It's so fun to see what everyone has been making!

    • Thanks Rachel! I love some of the patterns here..and found so many 8"  squares at crochetpatterncentral.com

It will be a weekend of crocheting here:)

  • Hi Mia, welcome to KAS :) Here is the link to the Frequently Asked Questions http://www.knit-a-square.com/FAQS.html. This should give you an idea how to get started. The photo section is great to see what everybody is contributing at the moment and we hope to see the pictures of your goodies soon ;) http://forum.knit-a-square.com/photo

    • Thank you Gitta! There is so much to read that I have actually been taking notes lol. The photos are inspiring and I can't wait to get started:)
