Hello Elsie, thank you for your comment.

I found the bamboo stitch at http://knitting.about.com/od/stitchglossary/g/bamboo_stitch.htm

but there are various other tutorials and patterns online.

I cast on 76 stitches and worked in pattern for 28-30 rows (14 or 15 ridges or about 5 inches).

On the wrong side I purled 2tog for a row (38 st)

Then worked three rows of pattern and dec again on wrong side (19 st), and then again on the next 2 rows until I was down to 5 which I drew up with the yarn.

I had a back seam because I don't like circular needles but it would easily adapt to knitting in the round.

I still find increasing difficult in crochet so I am not able to make Mary's beanies but I will one day - in the meantime I had to come up ith my own.

Hope you're well and the sun is shining there as it is here.

Thank you Elsie, I knit at the moment but I might have a go at learning to crochet. I found this website by accident when I was looking for new knitting stitches for something else I'm making and I was really inspired to have a go. My oldest son has spent the last two Easter holidays in Johannesburg with his church youth group helping to build homes for AIDS orphans so I feel a real connection with this cause. Annette

Hello Elsie. The blankets are knitted in DK used double thickness so the blankets have some warmth and weight. It was easy to sew the motifs into the wool without showing on the other side. I suppose you would call it a slip stitch that I used which attached to the loops of the wool stitches. I am going to try and make a Lion and Rhino template next. At least when I have done then I can use them again and again.

Hi Elsie, Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm looking forward to joining in with the fantastic efforts of the rest KAS. Your own squaresetc look so warm and soft and I love the colours! Can't wait to get started.

Hi Elsie, That's great. I have listed your squares under UK Group, 55,900 Countdown Challenge and the 2010 Tally.
Sorry you didn't get to see your son but at least you have it to look forward to. One of mine left for Australia two years ago yesterday and I still miss him desperately. I know what you mean about your offspring and the computer - when Sam left so did my technical help, in fact we have clocks that stay on BST now because we can't work out how to change them!
Hope you are enjoying your knitting still.

Hello Elsie,
Yes, I think we will still be keeping the UK Tally which we do by copying and pasting our totals to the old ones (someone will do it for you if you don't want to do it yourself). We also add to the 2010 Tally in the same way, and you can also take part in the new 55,900 race and choose a category if you wish. None of it is obligatory but it is just to keep us motivated - they're very good at psychology on this site. I'm just about to enter my donated squares under 55,900 but I won't put them under the actual tallies until I post them.
Is your son with you this weekend? Hope you have managed to have a good weekend.

Hi there, I look forward to your photos. I found it really easy to do when I got my camera. The system seems quite straight forward so I think you will have no problems.
